Throughout the war, repeated reports — including remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio — described Russian and Chinese aircraft delivering weapons and flying home with suitcases of gold from Iran's reserves.
This is nothing new. Before WWII, Washington itself sold arms to Britain and Australia for gold only — it wouldn't even accept its own dollars. In wartime, gold is the only currency that clears.
Where that leaves the Islamic Republic:
▪️ The gold vault is essentially drained
▪️ No one accepts its rial, its frozen dollars, or even its discounted oil
▪️ Salaries for civil servants and even IRGC personnel are late or short
▪️ The only tool left is the printing press → currency free-fall → hyperinflation
A state that pays gold for missiles ends up paying paper for wages. Ordinary Iranians pay the difference at the grocery store.
