One spoonful of beans per guest — until it was their own son's wedding. Abbas Abdi's account of Masoumeh Ebtekar & Mohammad Hashemi's wedding: the night before, panicked phone calls circulated — "I heard he wants to serve kebab, is it true? That's a scandal, serve stew instead." The next night, dinner was a single bowl of beans, one spoonful each. Years later, their son's wedding was held in the finest garden in Elahieh — dozens of dishes, plus a symbolic dab of beans "in memory" of his parents' revolutionary austerity. That is the whole arc of performative piety: the theater of simple living in the 80s, and today the same revolutionaries who discovered kebab also discovered hunting — and out of that fake austerity grew the hunting and fuel mafias. Beans for the people. Elahieh for themselves. 👇 Was the "simple living" always theater, or did it rot along the way? Comment below and send this to someone with a long memory.
