That is the line written from a Texas detention facility by the daughter-in-law of Massoumeh Ebtekar — spokeswoman of the 1979 US Embassy hostage takeover in Tehran.
In a long letter to the American people, she says she loves America, that her 12-year-old cannot speak Farsi and considers the US home, and that the family came only to live "a normal life."
Those two words reopened an old wound for millions of Iranians whose own normal lives were sacrificed to her mother-in-law's revolutionary adventure.
The irony writes itself: the woman who climbed the embassy wall and helped upend the world answers for her own actions. But those who dined on the fruits of that wall for forty years are not simply bystanders.
