Why did Mojtaba's closest man end up running the Basij?
Hossein Ta'eb's appointment as head of the Basij Organization is no bureaucratic reshuffle. Two reasons:
1) Street muscle matters to the Islamic Republic. Today that base belongs to the Paydari front and Saeed Jalili — and Mojtaba wants the eulogists, the plainclothes enforcers and the Basijis under his own control. Ta'eb is the instrument.
2) The bigger reason: fear. The regime's single greatest fear is a popular uprising. Because they expect the people to rise again, they placed their most trusted man atop the Basij — the Basij is the front line of repression. Whenever the crackdown happens in the streets, the Basij is out front.
Read it as a security signal, not an administrative one.
