The renewed pen. On 4 July, between funeral processions for the leader who first appointed him, a decree in Mojtaba Khamenei's name gave Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei five more years over Iran's judiciary: the first constitutional act of the new reign, published days after the Jerusalem Post reported he would be replaced. His machine did not pause for the war. Per Amnesty International, at least 39 political executions since 28 February, ten of them for alleged espionage, while the judiciary's Saham system seized the assets of more than 750 people, diaspora journalists included. Not one named senior insider is among the hanged: the purge built to answer the leak that killed a Supreme Leader has so far only reached downward. Whoever holds the pen chose him, and chose the one week the world was watching to prove the pen exists.
